One with the Earth

Universal Symbol for Environmental Awareness

An Idea Whose Time has Come

A Universal Symbol for
Environmental Sustainability

In the past, most environmental concerns were seen as separate issues competing for attention. We now realize they are all interconnected components of one overarching problem— human activity is depleting and degrading Earth’s resources faster than nature can renew them.

A universal environmental symbol will instantly identify those who use it as being part of the solution, either directly or through their support.

Introducing 'One with the Earth'

A universal environmental awareness symbol
Free for all to use

The symbol design represents the
sun (the source of all life's energy),
water (covers 70% of the Earth's surface),
land (30% of the Earth's surface) and life.

Why a new symbol?

Al Gore’s Academy Award winning movie, 'An Inconvenient Truth', is helping many people see that our current rates of consumption and pollution are not sustainable. But global warming is just one component of an even larger problem-- human activity is degrading and depleting Earth’s resources faster than nature can renew them.

While population is growing (from 2.5b to 6.5b in 50 years) the planet’s life support systems (e.g. forests, ocean fish, topsoil, biodiversity and water) are actually shrinking. All together they comprise one overarching challenge, ensuring a livable world for our children and future generations.

Living in harmony with nature: Once a value choice, is now a necessity

After selling my business a few years back, it occurred to me there would be benefit in having a unifying environmental symbol for all environmental proponents. I designed the 'One with the Earth' symbol to represent the shared purpose of all environmental concerns-- ensuring a livable world for our children and future generations.

The 'One with the Earth' symbol is a value statement, not a certification. It is intended for use by all who are working toward or supporting environmental sustainability. While calling attention to the larger challenge, the symbol will provide added urgency for individual issues. Imagine seeing the symbol used in association with the full spectrum of environmental concerns such as renewable and clean energy, organic foods and clothing, recycling, green building, farm preservation and non-polluting products. It can also be used as a badge, sticker or logo for nature programs at schools, camps and scouting. The symbol will be an ever-present reminder of the need to protect the environment and how our everyday choices matter.

Neither I nor the 'One with the Earth' symbol are connected to any organization, business or political entity.I ask no fee and want no recognition for its use. Now retired, I am the former owner of Dan’s Camera City (danscamera.com) in Allentown, PA.

I am confident that with a proper introduction, use of the symbol will take off on its own. Why? Because there is a need for it, it is not associated with any group or issue, and it benefits all who use it by increasing their visibility and identifying them as part of the solution. The symbol sends a powerful message that civilization has entered a new era where, from now on, responsibility for protecting the environment is no longer a value for some, but a necessity for all.

To gain widespread acceptance, a universal environmental symbol will require the advocacy of prominent people, the media and related organizations. If you or someone you know has use for the symbol or is in a position to influence others, please let me know.

I hope you find merit in this idea and will share your thoughts with me. Artwork is available on this page

I look forward to hearing from you,

Thank you
