Universal Eco-Symbol

All-Purpose Symbol for Environmental Awareness

An Idea Whose Time has Come

A Universal Symbol for
Environmental Sustainability

In the past, most environmental concerns were seen as separate issues competing for attention. We now realize they are all interconnected components of one overarching problem— human activity is depleting and degrading Earth’s resources faster than nature can renew them.

A universal environmental symbol instantly identifies those who use it as being part of the solution, either directly or through their support.

Universal Eco-Symbol

An all-purpose environmental awareness symbol
Free for all to use

The symbol design represents the
sun (the source of all life's energy),
water (covers 70% of the Earth's surface),
land (30% of the Earth's surface) and life.

Why a new symbol?

By now, spring 2012, most people realize that global warming is happening and that humans are contributing to it by the CO2 emissions from burning fossil fuels and from deforestation. People are also increasingly aware that world fisheries are being depleted, that fresh water supplies are shrinking and that every day there are more mouths to feed and less land to grow food.

While population is growing (from 3 b to7 b in 50 years) the planet’s life support systems (e.g. forests, ocean fish, topsoil, biodiversity and water) are actually shrinking. All together  humanity is facing one overarching challenge, ensuring a livable world for our children and future generations.

Living in harmony with nature: Once a value choice, is now a necessity

While calling attention to the larger challenge, the eco-symbol also adds weight to individual issues. The eco-symbol can be used as a badge, sticker or logo for nature programs at schools, camps and scouting. The symbol is an ever-present reminder of the need to protect the environment and how our everyday choices matter.

Neither I nor the  universal eco-symbol are connected to any organization, business or political entity.

The symbol simply says that civilization has entered a new era where, from now on, responsibility for protecting the environment is no longer a value for some, but a necessity for all.
